All available kiln time booked through March 1, 2026.......
We offer kiln drying services, full or partial loads. We operate a 5000 bd ft NYLE dehumidification kiln at our furniture shop. www.dryadstudios.com All wood going into the kiln must be properly air dried to 20%. We can dry 3/4, through 8/4 comfortably. Thicker wood may have to remain in the kiln for 2 cycles. We dry 5000 bd ft of 5/4 quartersawn oak from 20% to 5%, in 28 days. The wood never gets above 120 degrees. In woods that are prone to bugs, we can sterilize at 160 for 2 days.
A full kiln load of 5000 bd/ft 4/4 or 5/4 oak/cherry/ash/hickory/walnut etc., at an air-dried starting MC of <24%, dried down to 5% and then conditioned back up to 6-7%, will cost approx. $4,700. and take 20 to 30 days. We will consider drying quality lumber on shares. Pine or Cedar are much shorter schedules, and less cost. Our dried lumber has superb texture when we are through. We build fine furniture from it.
Wood can be air dried slowly for a year to 12-14%, and some costs can be saved.
The variables of partial loads are too broad to quote a specific cost. It will average $1.25/ bd ft to kiln dry wood in a small load. It all depends on the starting moisture, species, and thickness.
